Laser Treatment

How do lasers safely treat my veins?

The experts at Vein Doc NYC can safely eliminate spider and varicose veins using a laser that only targets the vein. At certain wavelengths, the laser’s energy is only absorbed by the red- and blue-colored pigments in veins. As a result, noninvasive and minimally invasive lasers treat the veins without affecting the surrounding tissues. After laser treatment removes the vein, your body naturally reroutes the blood flow through a healthier vein.

What type of laser treatment eliminates my veins?

You receive one of two laser treatments, depending on the vein requiring treatment.

Spider vein laser treatment

Laser treatment for spider veins is noninvasive. Your doctor at Vein Doc NYC places the laser against your skin, where the veins absorb its energy without affecting your skin. The laser’s heat makes the veins break down, your body clears away the debris, and the spider veins are gone.

Varicose vein laser treatment

Laser treatment for varicose veins is a minimally invasive procedure. The laser is contained in a thin, flexible catheter that your Vein Doc NYC physician inserts into the targeted vein through a very small incision. Using ultrasound to visualize the vein and see the catheter, your doctor gently guides it to the end of the varicosity, then slowly pulls the catheter backward through the vein.

As they withdraw the catheter, heat from the laser makes the walls collapse and scar tissue develop. Over time, your body absorbs the scarring, and varicosity is eliminated.

When should I expect during and after laser treatment for veins?

Laser treatment for spider veins is described as feeling like having a rubber band snapped against your skin. Though it’s usually well-tolerated, you may want to use a topical anesthetic, especially if your spider veins are on tender areas of your face. It may take several weeks to see optimal results because it takes time for your body to finish removing the cellular waste.

When receiving varicose veins treatment, you receive a local anesthetic at the incision site. Your doctor also places anesthetic fluid around the veins receiving treatment. This laser treatment takes about an hour or less, depending on the number of veins that need laser treatment. It may take a few months for the veins to completely disappear.
